CHEERS! - A MESSAGE FROM THE
You might call it the “Changing of the Guard”, that is, concerning
Deacons Rich Green
is retiring or stepping down from active diaconate ministry. Deacon Rich was ordained a deacon for the Archdiocese of Chicago by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin — 35 years ago. His “secular job” was working for the Water Distribution Department of Chicago. Deacon Rich and his wife of 53 years, Charlene, moved to Las Vegas 18 years ago; they have three adult children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. For the past 17 years Rich served as deacon at Christ the King and Holy Spirit parishes. Here at Holy Spirit, Deacon Rich’s main ministry was Director of our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process. As such he has journeyed with dozens of men and women on their path to full membership in the Roman Catholic faith; he was joined, of course, by a wonderful team of volunteers whom he also led in this ministry. Additionally, Rich served on a regular basis at weekend liturgies as Deacon of the Word — proclaiming the Gospel and preaching the homily; and as Deacon of the Altar — serving at the Eucharistic table. Deacon Rich also blessed the homes of many of our parishioners. I am so grateful for his time with us at Holy Spirit. He will be missed; but he’s not going to disappear! In fact, Charlene and Rich live just a half-mile from the church. So, we will still see them at worship with us; and, he has promised to be available if I call upon him; he will be “on hand” to do house blessings. Again, thank you, Rich and Charlene, for all you have given to the Church in Chicago, Las Vegas and especially here at Holy Spirit. May you enjoy your retirement: God bless you.
Deacon Tom Roberts
was ordained by Bishop Joseph Pepe in 2011. He worked with Station Casinos, in development, until Bishop Pepe asked him to direct Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada — which he has been doing for the last eight years. And what an amazing job he has done there: keeping the organization on solid financial footing and ever expanding the scope and number of services to the poor and unfortunate in Clark County. He has also served as a Deacon at St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, parish for 10 years. Deacon Tom will continue to direct Catholic Charities as his “full-time” job, but like Deacon Rich, he will serve in some of our parish ministries as well as Deacon of the Word and Altar at weekend Masses. Tom’s wife, Karen, works in the Bishop’s Office as Assistant to our Vicar General, Monsignor Gregory Gordon. They have three adult children:
Megan, Jason and Tommy (who worked as a weekend Mass coordinator for us in our early years at the Bishop Gorman High School cafeteria). Welcome, Tom and Karen. We look forward to your ministry here at Holy Spirit.
Our offices and Gift Shop will be closed Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day. And, during the summer months of June, July and August, the offices will closed at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Fridays and the Gift Shop will close at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays.
Happy Feast Day! Have a good week. God bless you.

NEWS FROM THE
Update from the Diocese:
Anyone who is fully vaccinated is no longer required to wear masks on Diocesan properties. The verification of vaccinations will be based solely on the honor system for those visiting our properties.
Out of consideration for the many people who remain medically vulnerable (including certain clergy and the elderly), the Council encourages the continued wearing of masks. The wearing or not wearing a mask, is a personal decision that we all respect.
The Diocese is also encouraging the continuance of social distancing
Church capacity will remain at 80% or 1360 people allowed for each Mass.

Each year we are invited to participate generously in the Catholic Stewardship Appeal, so to be good and faithful Catholic stewards. This year, the pandemic has challenged us in living our faith and practicing stewardship like never before. At the same time, this moment of crisis has opened for us new opportunities to evangelize and practice charity. Our pastoral outreach, through televised, taped, and live-streamed Masses, supported by the CSA, has expanded in ways we’ve never dreamed before. And as our parishes open up again, and more faithful assist at Mass and receive the sacraments, we also open up to new stewardship opportunities,
strengthening one another in the faith.

MOMENT OF THE
Baccalaureate Mass! This past Thursday, Bishop Gorman High School celebrated Baccalaureate Mass at Holy Spirit. In addition to celebrating this full Mass, which last year was only 50 people in attendance, the Graduating Core Team Leaders had a chance to show off their first official Core Team Cords in honor of their service and involvement to Youth Ministry over the past two years! Congratulations to all of our Graduates...both those from Bishop Gorman and the many other teens from schools all around the Las Vegas valley!

Read the Readings from this Sunday, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40
Psalm 33:4-5, 6, 9, 18-19, 20, 22; Romans 8:14-17; Matthew 28:16-20
Use the following discussion/reflection questions in your families, with your spouse, your friends, or even as personal journal questions:
1. In the Gospel, Jesus says, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Is your life a reflection of these words? How? What makes it hard to give God all of the power?
2. What is the biggest thing in your life you allow to replace God?
3. We have been given the gift of the Holy Trinity — the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What about the Holy Trinity is difficult to understand?
4. Is there a particular person of the Trinity you have a hard time growing in relationship with? Why do you think that is?
This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity!
In the darkness we were waiting, without hope without light.
Till from heaven You came running, there was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfil the law and prophets to a Virgin came the Word
From a throne of endless glory, to a cradle in the dirt
Praise the Father, praise the Son, praise the Spirit three in one
God of glory - Majesty! Praise forever to the King of Kings
To reveal the kingdom coming and to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation You did not despise the cross
For even in Your suffering You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation Jesus for our sake You died

This year’s Angel Tree project will be a little different. As you are aware several things are different from prior years: We are practicing social distancing and many schools have not reopened. Many families are without jobs through no fault of their own. The agencies are at a disadvantage since they must use fewer volunteers to assist in their Christmas gift giving programs. We are limited in space for storage and the number of volunteers we can use at one time. Therefore, we are asking everyone to try something new this year…
After all the Masses on the weekend of
, volunteers will be handing out a special Angel tag as you leave Mass. Please consider taking one or two to help a child in need this Christmas. If you are unable to attend Mass and watch virtually, we have inserted an Angel tag in the bulletin that you can print, cut out and attach to your stocking. We will also leave some Angels in a basket in the gathering space of the church if you attend morning Mass during the week.
Here is what we are asking:
Please purchase a 16”-18” Christmas stocking and a Target, Walmart, Visa, etc. gift card (minimum $25). Please be sure to write the amount of your gift card somewhere on the card. You may choose the age and gender (newborn - teenagers) of your Angel just be sure to write that information on the back of the Angel. Put the gift card in the stocking and fill the rest of the stocking with little fun items you think your Angel would enjoy receiving. For many children this might be the only gift they will receive this year. After you have purchased the items and filled your stocking attach your Angel tag to the stocking and follow the directions on the back of the Angel tag. It is important that you give your stocking to one of the volunteers either on Wednesdays or on the weekend before all the Masses.
If you are unable to shop or would like us to shop for you, please put your donation (checks payable to Holy Spirit) in an envelope and label it “Angel Tree”. You can also go online to our website
, go to “Give On Line” and select “Angel Tree. Donations in the Poor Box will also assist with this project.
Thank you for rising to this new challenge and making this Christmas special for many deserving children. God bless you!
